wooden spool tutorial
You will Need two plywood discs or wooden discs and a piece of wooden dowel.
I sawed large discs with a jigsaw and the smaller ones I sawed with a hole saw.
You can use purchased discs if you find them in the store.
For a wooden dowel you can cut a piece from a broomstick or a hoe stick or a straight piece from an old spindle.
Sand your pieces with an orbital sander and remove splinters from all parts.
Using wood glue, adhere the wooden dowel in the center between the two discs and wait for it to dry completely.
If you want to have a hole in the center along the wooden dowel you can drill with a drill bit on both sides of the spool until a hole is formed in the center of the wooden dowel. This is an unnecessary step. The spool looks great even without a real hole .
Your spool is actually ready. To give an old-fashioned look to the spool I painted everything with a cloth soaked in brown acrylic paint diluted with water. I live in Israel and could not find Waverley's antiquing wax in stores, so I improvised with what is available. It worked great but after the paint dries you must sand it again…
The next step is to find printable vintage labels on Google. There are freebies and some that you must pay for.
Most of them are simply a photograph of an old spool. Increase or decrease the size of the circle of your graphics according to the size of your wooden discs. On plain printer paper, print two from each sample. I used a standard inkjet printer. To prevent ink bleeding from my print I sprayed a thin layer of matte clear Rust-oleum spray. Fixation can also be done with a simple hair spray. Use whatever more available to you.
Wait for it to dry completely. Cut out the circles and distress the white edges with some brown distressing ink. Then adhere to discs on both sides of the spool with a thin layer of Mod Podge. After complete drying apply a thin layer of Mod Podge also on top of the labels. If you do not wait for the first layer of Mod Podge to dry completely, air bubbles will form under the paper when you lay the upper Mod Podge layer. After complete drying you just need to gently sand everything again with a fine sandpaper and your spool is ready for staging.
You can also make bigger ones. they are useful containers for what you would like to store. for example, for your spools of sewing thread. I use a tin can or an empty container of baby formula and three wooden discs. Two large and one small. I adhere the bottom disc to the tin can with a glue gun plus e6000 glue. I added a small disc the size of the inside diameter of the can in the center of the top disc and thus creates a useful lid for the container and with the help of hot glue I attach a spiral of rope to cover the can.
I want to make a really big one as a side table that also serves as a place to store things like I saw a long time ago on Pinterest. But I still have not found a container large enough for it. It seems to me that I will use a large roll of cardboard and 2 round trays from IKEA. I promise to show you when I make one ...
